Final Project: Animated Patterns

For my final project, I drew inspiration from the patterns I see around my hometown – New Delhi, India. There are lots of monuments scattered across Delhi, dating back as early as the 1100s, each contributing to the city’s unique character and soul. One of my favorite monuments is the Red Fort, which was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahan in the late 1600s. The buildings within the fort have exquisite inlay work and intricate designs adorning their walls and ceilings. Captivated by the timeless beauty of the Red Fort, I wanted to bring the space to life and bring the viewer’s attention to all these beautiful designs that often go unnoticed or taken as a given. My approach involved animating the intricate patterns spanning the surfaces of the many buildings in this fort.

I used my knowledge of Photoshop to cut up still images into various parts – from the background to each individual element earmarked for animation. After that, I transitioned to After Effects, where I brought these elements to life through animation, infusing movement into the once static patterns. Lastly, I used Premiere Pro to compile the animations and add some final touches like music to really allow for an immersive experience.
